European Commission published minutes of the latest Member States meeting

Last Committee on National Alcohol Policy and Action (CNAPA) meeting took place 7/8 November 2017. Record of that meeting has been published by the European Commission.


Stereotypes about women’s drinking branded unfair and unhelpful

A new report launched today (Wednesday) by Scottish Health Action on Alcohol Problems (SHAAP) and the Institute of Alcohol Studies (IAS) addresses some of the challenges faced by women in relation to alcohol and is supported by infographics developed by Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) and the University of Stirling.

Last year the European Commission provided the alcohol industry with the opportunity to come up with a self-regulatory proposal on alcohol labelling, an opportunity which the industry has ignored.


The future of alcohol labels?

The European alcohol industry has long upheld a privilege to conceal what is inside the drinks it produces. All EU-made foods – except for alcoholic beverages – are obliged to inform consumers about ingredients and nutritional content on the packaging. That exemption draws to an end.

Eurocare today published a report on wine promotion subsidies under EU’s Common Agricultural Policy, calling for EU lawmakers to phase out this costly market intervention. The report entitled ‘Europe’s billion-euro wine spillage’ highlights the problems of cost inefficiency, public health risks, alcohol ads targeting youth and funds misuse, to mention some.


European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) report: Progress in reducing drink driving in Europe

25,670 people were killed in the European Union as a consequence of road collisions in 2016. Driving under the influence of alcohol is one of the four main killers on the road, alongside speeding, non-use of seatbelts and driver distraction.
