Faced by the mounting evidence on the effect alcohol marketing has in increasing the use of alcohol among young people, a number of European public health NGOs have decided to join forces to set up the 1st European alcohol marketing monitoring centre: EUCAM.

France: French court rules online alcohol ad illegal
A French court on Thursday ruled it illegal to advertise alcoholic drinks on the Internet, giving the Dutch brewer Heineken three weeks to take down beer ads from its French website.

Germany: Alcohol Consumption among Minors: an endless Public Health problem
The Ministry of Health published data from the European School Survey Project on Alcohol and other Drugs (ESPAD) in March 2008. 12,448 pupils in grade nine and ten in seven ‘Länder' were interviewed about their consumption of alcohol, tobacco and illicit drugs (cannabis, cocaine, etc.) as well as their attitude and their risk assessment towards these psychoactive substances. In regards to the results of this survey, the Federal Drug Commissioner stressed: “The data showed that our efforts in reducing tobacco and drug consumption among the young people were successful, but the level of excessive alcohol consumption which are reached by pupils is alarming.”
Scotland: Government threatens to tax supermarkets in war of booze culture
The Scottish Government is preparing to take on supermarkets and off-licences in the battle against alcohol abuse, forcing them to pay a levy under new plans to make retailers meet the social cost of the country's "bevy culture.”
ADD - Alcohol and HIV/AIDS - possible connections
Alcohol use and drunken behaviour is neither acknowledged nor well-documented as a contributing factor to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. This situation, though, is now gradually changing. An increasing amount of research is being conducted on HIV/AIDS and alcohol, and the connections between the two are coming gradually clearer from a scientific perspective.
