Belgian Eurocare member criticizes 'Alcohol Marathon'
More than 4000 students are planning on drinking nothing but alcoholic beverages for 24 hours on the 30th of June to celebrate the end of their exams.
‘Stupid and dangerous’, says Marijs Geirnaert of the Belgian Organisation for Alcohol and other Drug problems (Vereniging voor Alcohol- en andere Drugsproblemen - VAD).
An event created on Facebook by an 18-year-old student, invites other students to consume nothing but alcoholic beverages from 8 in the morning until 8 the next morning. This ‘Marathon Monday’ originated in the American television show ‘Blue Mountain State’, a show about the daily life of university students.
‘This is not okay’, says Marijs Geirnaert of the Belgian Organisation for Alcohol and other Drug problems. ‘These students are exhausted and tired after their exams and that poses even more risks. The impact of alcohol is stronger after a stressful and exhausting time. And you should consume a non-alcoholic beverage after every unit of alcohol. It is appalling that young people underestimate the risks of alcohol.’ Sharing pictures and movies on social media makes matters even worse, according to Geirnaert: ‘Shared pictures and movies need to be spectacular.’
