Call for an EU Homelessness Strategy

Homelessness can be ended! How can you help? Please ask your MEP to Sign the Written Declaration today. In order to find out which MEPs still have to sign the petition please contact Eurocare.

The European Parliament has recently launched a written declaration calling for a renewed focus on reducing homelessness across the EU through a specific EU action plan.

It is not uncommon for people who are homeless to use alcohol as a coping mechanism for the stress and anxiety which accompanies living rough on the street. Problematic alcohol use among people who are homeless has serious health consequences, such as hepatitis, alcoholic cirrhosis, pancreatitis or diabetes and often can cause and exacerbate poor mental health. This is particularly important for a population which already faces barriers and obstacles to accessing healthcare, as other health conditions worsen with alcohol misuse.

A strategy to end homelessness must also incorporate an adequate policy approach to addressing alcohol consumption, which is both a cause and a consequence of homelessness. Ending homelessness and improving the quality of life for people who are homeless is a realistic and achievable policy goal but will require action and a commitment from EU policy makers. Join the European Economic and Social Committee, the Committee of the Regions and the Employment, Social Policy, Health and Consumer Affairs Council in expressing the need for EU support in addressing homelessness.
