Eurocare welcomes UN resolution on Non-communicable Diseases

Eurocare warmly welcomes the resolution titled “Political Declaration of the High-level Meeting of the General Assembly on the Prevention and Control of Non-communicable Diseases”

adopted by consensus at the High Level Meeting on Prevention and Control of Non-communicable Diseases in New York, 19-20 September 2011

Eurocare further welcomes the Declaration’s specific commitment to alcohol by reaffirming and promoting the Global Strategy to Reduce the Harmful Use of Alcohol.

36 million of the 57 million global deaths in 2008 were due to non-communicable diseases. Alcohol is one the four major risk factors, together with tobacco use, unhealthy diet and lack of physical activity.

Europe has the highest proportion of total ill health and premature deaths due to alcohol in the world. Eurocare is hopeful that European governments will meet the health challenges addressed in the resolution, and commit to action to reduce alcohol related harm, through introduction of a comprehensive Alcohol Strategy for Europe.
