Message from Eurocare's former president: Michel Craplet
Dear Eurocare members,
As those of you who were present at the General Assembly already know, I have resigned from the position as Eurocare’s President.
I had the privilege to serve in this position for over 20 years. From the first mention in 1986 of a need to tackle the problems related to harmful and hazardous consumption of alcohol in the Council Resolution, through 2006 EU Alcohol Strategy, to last year’s adoption of WHO Global Alcohol Strategy there has been many changes in terms of European alcohol policy.
Eurocare was created in 1990, as concerns grew over the impact of the single market on national alcohol policies. Throughout the 1990’s Eurocare published reports outlining the negative impact of alcohol consumption, but otherwise played a limited ‘lobbying’ role. Health policy was not in the remit of the EU, with time the recognition of the importance of health issues has moved forward on the European political agenda. These developments have allowed Eurocare to gradually push the issue of alcohol related harm onto the EU political agenda.
It has given me great pleasure to see Eurocare grow over the last twenty years, from few enthusiasts to a network of 50 entities among 21 countries.
Our work to tackle alcohol related harm and raise it on the political agenda is by no means finished. The EU Alcohol Strategy which we have strongly supported, is coming to an end in 2012. This produces new challenges but also opportunities.
I am very pleased that my place is being filled by a very experienced, dedicated and competent colleague, Tiziana Codenotti. I am confident that she will guide Eurocare with great enthusiasm, energy and wisdom.
I am still member of Eurocare board and shall continue to work specially on topics I want to promote such as prevention through education and the importance of culture in alcohol policy. On this last topic, I shall surely get in touch with you in order to build a real European data bank with examples coming from your individual countries and cultures.
I would like to thank each and every one of you for your lasting trust and belief in my ability to perform this position and lead Eurocare throughout the years.
With best wishes,
Michel Craplet
