NCDs high on the agenda in the European Parliament

Alcohol is one of the top four risk causes and need to be acknowledged and get the needed attention

Last week, the MEP Heart Group arranged the meeting ‘Learning from the UN Summit on Non-Communicable Diseases’. This meeting was calling for action to be taken at the European level, and exchanged outcomes of the UN High-Level Summit on NCDs with Commissioner for Health and Consumer Affairs, mr John Dalli and Dr. Roberto Bertollini, Chief Scientist and World Health Organization (WHO) Representative to the EU.

NDCs remain the leading cause of death worldwide, and in Europe, NCDs account for 86% of deaths and 77% of the disease burden. “Alcohol is one of the four top risk factors for NCDs, together with tobacco, poor diet and physical inactivity, and it is important to address alcohol in this context and give it the attention needed”, says Mariann Skar, Secretary General in Eurocare.
