Plenary of the European Parliament to vote on the reform of the wine sector

On 12 December the plenary of the European Parliament will vote on the proposal on the common organisation of the market in wine.

The role of the parliament in this dossier is only consultative, which means that the Council must wait for the Parliament's opinion but it is not bound by it.

The proposal from the Commission and the draft report from the Parliament can be downloaded from

Some of the measures proposed by the Parliament to increase revenue of the wine sector that were not in the initial proposal from the Commission include: a targeted increase of 75 million new internal consumers, promoting to third countries where there is an effective demand of millions of consumers; To have particular regard to the steadily developing demand in the Asian emerging markets; to create an environment which will enable the wine sector to act independently in response to market requirements; The provision of information concerning the positive effects of moderate wine consumption and the harmful effects of irresponsible alcohol consumption; or to highlight the advantages of community wines not only in terms of quality but also of health benefits.
