ETSC Road Safety Manifesto for the 2014 European Parliament Elections

ETSC has identified driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs as one of the four priority areas for action during the mandate of the next European Parliament.

"Members of the European Parliament have a strong word to say when it comes to improving road safety in the EU. ETSC hopes the new MEPs - to be elected in May next year - will show the leadership needed to sustainably curb the loss of life and limb on our roads," said Antonio Avenoso, ETSC Executive Director.
ETSC has identified driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs as one of the four priority areas for action during the mandate of the next European Parliament. The other areas are speeding, infrastructure safety and the safety of the vulnerable road users. "Action in all of those areas carries significant potential to prevent deaths and serious injuries on EU roads. ETSC strongly believes future MEPs should support new policies, as well as the extension of existing initiatives, in these areas to address the most significant risk factors on EU roads," said Mr. Avenoso.

The ETSC Road Safety Manifesto is clear on the vision of a zero tolerance to drink and drug driving, and reminds the readers that drink driving remains the second biggest killer on EU roads, and states that the future MEPs should support:

  • A Directive setting a zero tolerance to drink driving for all drivers.
  • Alcohol interlocks for repeat offenders and professional drivers.
  • Common techniques for roadside drug driving enforcement.
