Scientific society Socidrogalcohol launches a stigma campaign in Spain

Stigma in addiction patients is a problem along different countries in Europe, as it is in Spain. Socidrogalcohol is a scientific society working in addiction related problems during more than 40 years in the country.

He has now launched a national campaign with the main purpose of reduce the stigma of addicted people within society and claim intervention according to this normalization.

To reach this purpose Socidrogalcohol is working since January 2017 on different materials such as television spots, advertisement in radio, brochures about addiction and stigma and posters with the common presence of a heroin bird in red as a pet of the campaign.

Socidrogalcohol wants not only reduce stigma within society but also working with health professionals who also see in a wrong way people with this problem.

Specific objectives:

  • Encourage a comprehensive, public and free approach, assuming coordination with NGOs, patient organizations and private initiative, in which physical, psychic and social aspects are equally important to achieve total recovery of the person.
  • Reclaim the existence of structures of care according to the needs of patients and their families
  • Standardize services and care resources: Standardization of integrated resources within public health networks.
  • Consolidate the right of all patients / users to access, under the same conditions, the drugs appropriate to their pathology and to psychotherapies that have proved effective, as well as their complications.
  • Normalize the use of opioid agonist drugs with the highest guarantees and conditions of quality, distribution, prescription and dispensing.
  • Demand from the administration the financing of all treatments aimed at dependence (nicotinic, alcoholic, opiates) of demonstrated efficacy and that provides benefits in terms of the reduction
  • Claim and reinforce the rights of these patients to receive treatment and care as any patient who may suffer another pathology.
  • Demand the support of the administration to patient and family organizations, recognizing their work in improving the living conditions of users and their families
  • Increase social awareness that addiction is a disease by showing that the addict is a normal person with a health problem
  • Increase normalization and social understanding that disease is neither a vice normal personal choice

  • Raise social awareness about the need to reintegrate people who suffer from it and that stigma does not contribute to it but complicates it
  • Visibilize, give voice and work together with the groups of addicted patients
  • To make known to the collaborators and sponsors the social aspect of the scientific society so important in the comprehensive treatment of addictions and to be able to convince them to lend their support and to be able to develop this project.
