State of Health in the EU: Commission pools expertise to support health policies in EU countries

The European Commission is bringing together internationally renowned expertise to strengthen country-specific and EU-wide knowledge in the field of health. This effort will support Member States in their evidence-based policy making.

The two-year State of Health in the EU includes four deliverables:

  • The bi-annual Health at a Glance: Europe report, prepared by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), with the next edition coming up in November 2016
  • A package of 28 individual country health profiles, prepared by the OECD and the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies in cooperation with the Commission, first available in November 2017
  • A Commission paper to accompany the 28 country health profiles. The flagship report will build on the findings from the two deliverables above, linking them to the broader EU agenda, emphasising cross-cutting policy implications, potential for mutual learning and highlighting EU added value
  • The fourth action, offered as soon as the second and third are released (starting November 2017), comprises voluntary exchanges that Member States can request to discuss best practices and other findings from the State of Health in the EU.

With the State of Health in the EU, the Commission will bring together internationally recognised expertise and will make every effort to provide Member States with the evidence relevant to their specific context, without judging on their comparative performance.
