UK - Alcohol related Hospital admissions up by 47%
According to newly published statistics alcohol-related hospital admissions have increased by 47% over the last five years. The figures show that there were 945,223 people admitted to hospital with an alcohol-related illness between 2008-09, compared to 644,185 in 2004/05.
A new report from the NHS Confederation and the Royal College of Physicians highlights that treating alcohol-related conditions cost the NHS approximately £2.7 billion in 2006/07.
Meanwhile, the Policy Exchange think-tank predicted that excess drinking over New Year's Eve could cost the NHS £23 million and suggested that people admitted to hospital to sleep off alcohol excesses should meet the costs of their own care.Click here
