STAP - Invitation to participate in study tour about enforcement of local alcohol policy in Sweden
STAP is organizing a study tour to Sweden. The city of residence is Stockholm. The tour will be
organised for the 2nd till the 5th of June 2010. We would like to invite you to register for participation,
with help of the registration form.
Together with this invitation letter and register form we added the provisional programme of the tour.
You will receive the final programme, including all the speakers, times and practical information later
on.
This tour is approaching the wish of many Dutch and European professionals to gain more knowledge
about the theory and practice of the enforcement of alcohol legislation on local level. The opinion of
STAP is that Sweden accomplished, as result of a vigorous enforcement policy, a strong improvement
of compliance of alcohol legislation. This includes compliance of minimal legal purchase age and the
prohibition of serving alcohol to intoxicated people. We will meet local enforcement people, national
policy experts and politicians and we will talk about the success of the Swedish alcohol policy.
Interesting is how Sweden take on the development of an integral local alcohol policy, and during the
study trip there is also some attention for this topic.
Sweden is a country with an interesting development regarding alcohol policy. Wrongfully is the
suggestion that alcohol related problems are bigger as in other European countries. In reality the
alcohol consumption and the related health damages are less in Sweden as in countries like the
Netherlands. The Swedish alcohol policy is feared by the alcohol producers.
Since 1995 Sweden is a member of the European Union. Since that moment Sweden had to change
their strict alcohol policy. This resulted in an increase in the alcohol consumption, especially within the
youth. The local policy, as a reaction to the increase of the consumption, is intensified, especially the
enforcement of the legislation and the development of local policy in general.
You will receive more background information about the national and local treatment of the alcohol
related problems in Sweden.
