Written question on Launch of the Outox energy drink in France
25 June 2010
Question for written answer E-4729/2010 to the Commission Rule 117 Gilles Pargneaux (S&D)
Subject: Launch of the Outox energy drink in France
Friday 18 June will see the Belgian company Lifestyle Drink SA's energy drink Outox launched in France. Already available on the Canadian and Japanese markets, Outox is advertised as 'a sparkling drink which significantly speeds up the lowering of alcohol levels in the blood, and allows people to sober up more quickly'.
Sold in 33cl cans, Outox is initially going to be sold over the internet. The Outox spokesman has stated that the company intends to proceed to sell the product in supermarkets, bars, restaurants and even in vending machines on university premises.
Lifestyle Drink SA claims that it possesses clinical tests proving that Outox really reduces the effects of alcohol in the blood. The company has apparently employed the services of several laboratories and doctors. Nonetheless, Lifestyle Drink SA is at present refusing to reveal the results of these tests, preferring to wait until the official Outox launch.
A product which makes such claims for itself could prove to be extremely dangerous, and would fly in the face of all policies designed to prevent drunk driving.
Can the Commission state whether a study or a campaign at European level could be envisaged in order to combat all these energy drinks which encourage young people to consume alcoholic beverages?
