New study reveals enforcement of age limits in Spain is ineffective
According to a recent study carried out by the Spanish Consumers' association, alcohol is easily accessible to underage drinkers in Spain. Although the minimum purchase legal age for alcohol is 18 in Spain (16 in Asturias), the study showed that in 75% of cases, underage drinkers were able to buy alcohol without any problems.
An underage selling test was carried out in 123 premises in six of the main Spanish cities (Barcelona, Madrid, Granada, Bilbao, Valencia and Valladolid). The volunteers taking part in it were between 15 and 17 years old.
The study, however, showed differences between regions. For example Madrid the volunteers were only able to buy whisky in 33% of the test purchases; however, when it came to buying beer, 61 % of purchase attempts were successful.
In other regions like Valencia, Barcelona or Granada the percentages were considerably higher, ranging from 95 to 85% for all beverage purchases, indicating lower levels of enforcement.
The study also showed that it is easier for underage drinkers to purchase alcohol from night shops, supermarkets and 24 hour shops than in bars or cafes.
