“Public Health: What is Next for Europe?” EPHA Conference
27 November 2008, Brussels
EPHA will be holding a public health policy conference on Thursday 27th November, ahead of the Extraordinary General Assembly on 28th November.
Good public health policy making calls for long-term and often visionary thinking. It calls for projections on the needs and challenges facing populations not just in the ‘here and now' but also in 5, 10 or 20 years time: investing now for the future.
Good public health policy does not allow for short term solutions in order to win votes and gain popularity. However public health policy is often subject to political whim and shifting policy priorities.
With the changes to the EU administration over the next twelve months, the conference aims to look at the main challenges facing the public health community and hopes to identify concrete avenues for cooperation and leadership in order to navigate the political climate.
After a welcome and introduction by the WHO and the European Commission, keynote speakers will outline various topics for discussion:
- Leadership in public health
- Effective and empowered civil society in health
- EU competence in public health
- Upcoming challenges to health
Following these presentations, participants will break up into parallel sessions to debate these subjects.
